Protecting Your Vacation Home Investment

In difficult economic times vacation homes have always been a target for thieves or vandals. Many are located in out of the way places with few neighbors and site empty for months at a time. A break in may not even be noticed for weeks and people discovering it may not know how to contact the owners.

Our family owned a small cabin north of Chama, New Mexico, USA in the 1970's and it was a problem. There were several breakins. The thieves took a wood burning stove and not much else. That was probably because it was a very humble cabin furnished with castoffs. There were no good tools, guns, or booze. We felt fortunate they didn't decide to vandalize the place out of spite.

Things have changed a lot since then. New "cabins" may have a couple thousand square feet, new appliances, ATV's in the garage, power tools, etc. Theft is a lot more rewarding. In addition, if the thieves leave windows or doors open pipes may freeze and serious damage can result.

Even very remote locations can now reach the internet with affordable technology. That means surveillance cameras and two way communication is possible. On this site we will be writing about the tools and techniques needed to make remote security a reality.
